Converting Your Basement
If you have an expanding family, a lack of storage space or you want to add value to your home, then a basement can be very useful. A basement is usually a large, rarely used space, or a place to keep stuff that you don't often use. However, by converting your basement you can not only add value to your home, but you can create a nice place for your family and the extra room is always useful.
Plan Your Conversion Carefully
When considering converting your basement, it's best to be realistic and plan what would be the best option for conversion. For example, consider whether you want the basement to be another bedroom, a games room, a home gym, a storage space or whatever else you can think of.
Secondly, consider how much of the conversion will be cosmetic, such as wallpaper and flooring, and consider how much of it will be more complicated, such as if there are any leaks or major structural problems. Non-cosmetic problems are often more time-consuming and expensive to solve so keep that in mind when considering your budget.
Thirdly, take into account health and safety regulations. If you're converting the basement into a room which will be used regularly such as an extra bedroom, you are required by law to install a window. This is for safety in the event of a fire.
Are Basement Conversions worth the wait?
Although converting your basement does require time, effort and a lot of planning, it is a great way to add a little extra living space to your home, and it can add value to your home.
